Riding a Bike With Duct Tape Tires | MythBusters Jr.

[ TIRES SCREECH ] SWEET RIDE! ALL IT NEEDS IS
A NEW PAIR OF WHEELS. Narrator: TO TEST THE EFFICACY
OF DUCT TAPE TIRES, THE TEAM’S STARTING OFF
A LITTLE SLOWER AND BEGINNING WITH A BIKE. HERE WE GO. Narrator: GIVEN JESSE HAS BUILT
HIS OWN MOTORBIKE… AW, NUTS! CHANGING A BICYCLE WHEEL
PRESENTS NO PROBLEM. [ GRUNTS ] IS PART OF BUILDING
MAKING GRUNT NOISES? [ LAUGHS ] AND WE ARE DONE. -WOW.
-NINJA SKILLS. -HA.
-WE NEED TO BE METHODICAL ABOUT HOW WE BUILD OUR TIRE. I’VE TAKEN SOME MEASUREMENTS
OF A STANDARD BICYCLE TIRE SO THAT OUR DUCT TAPE TIRE CAN
BE MODELED AFTER IT. WE USE HALF-INCH STRIPS
TO FILL THE RIM AND THEN FULL STRIPS TO MAKE THE
HEIGHT. Narrator: WITH THE SPECS,
THE GUY GO TO WORK. AND CANNAN HAS A SURPRISING
CONFESSION. I’VE NEVER RIDDEN
A BIKE BEFORE. DON’T GO TOO FAST. THIS ISN’T THAT BAD. Rachel:
AAH! OH, YOU’RE GOING TOO FAST. [ DUCT TAPE RIPS ] THIS IS PRETTY EASY. LOOK, MOM, NO HANDS! Narrator: SEVERAL MILES
ON A ROAD TO NOWHERE AND THEY HAVE
THEIR DUCT TAPE TIRE. -CANNAN.
-YES? YOU HAVE A DUCT TAPE TIRE. OH, YEAH. Narrator: BUT WILL IT PROVIDE A
SERVICEABLE RIDE? TO FIND OUT, CUE TWO
COMPARATIVE CONTROLS. FIRST UP, REGULAR WHEELS. WE PUT THIS CUP
ON OUR BICYCLE AND WE FILLED IT TO THE TOP
WITH WATER. GO. Cannan:
AND SHE’S OFF. AFTER EACH SET OF TIRES TAKES
ITS TURN AROUND THE COURSE… Jesse: OH, WE’RE
EXPERIENCING SOME SPILLAGE. …WE’LL SEE HOW MUCH
WATER’S BEEN SPILLED. MY WATER IS BEAUTIFUL. Cannan: THIS SHOULD GIVE US
AN INDICATION OF HOW SMOOTH THE RIDE IS
BETWEEN EACH TEST. -WHOO!
-YEAH. FINISHED. Cannan WE STARTED OFF AT 300mL
AND NOW WE’RE AROUND 270. ALL RIGHT, LET’S SWAP OVER
THE RIMS. OKAY. Narrator: IF THE MYTH REQUIRES A
MacGYVER-STYLE SAVE, ARE YOU READY FOR THIS? I MUST BE CRAZY. GO. Cannan: OH! Jesse: OH, GOODNESS.
THAT SOUNDS TERRIBLE. Narrator: THEN THE REAL GAUGE OF
THE DUCT TAPE SUCCESS… THIS IS A LOT MORE
THAN LAST TIME. IT’S GOING ALL OVER ME! Narrator: …WILL BE TO SEE
WHERE IT FALLS IN THE SPECTRUM. OH, SHE’S FALLING! THIS IS TERRIBLE! Narrator: BETWEEN A REGULAR
TIRE… DON’T FALL!
[ LAUGHS ] AAH! TIRES ARE REALLY USEFUL. Narrator: …AND NOTHING AT ALL. YOU LOST A CAMERA. -[ LAUGHS ]
-AND ALL OF THE WATER. [ LAUGHS ] THIS IS THE WORST! YEAH! [ LAUGHS ] Cannan: YOU STARTED AT 300mL AND
NOW YOU’RE DOWN TO 85mL NOW. NOW IT’S TIME TO TEST OUR DUCT
TAPE TIRE. AND OUT WITH THE OLD
AND IN WITH THE NEW. YEAH. [ LAUGHS ] SHE’S READY TO RIDE. THREE, TWO, ONE, GO. OH, THIS ISN’T TOO BAD. SO FAR SO GOOD. THESE DUCT TAPE TIRES NOT ONLY
LOOK GOOD, THEY’RE ACTUALLY KIND OF SMOOTH. BUT THEY ALSO FEEL GOOD. WORKING A LOT BETTER
THAN THE RIMS. LIKE IT LOOKS LIKE
SHE’S PEDALING SLOWER JUST BECAUSE OF
HOW HEAVY THEY ARE. Rachel: I DON’T EVEN CARE
HOW THEY PERFORM, I’M JUST GLAD
I’M OFF THOSE RIMS. THIS IS GREAT, DUDES. AND, FINISHED. Cannan: THE RESULTS ARE IN. THESE DUCT TAPE TIRES
ARE FANTASTIC. Cannan: RACHEL DID PRETTY WELL
WITH THE DUCT TAPE TIRE. WE DIDN’T LOSE MUCH WATER. WITH THE RIMS,
SHE DIDN’T HAVE MUCH TRACTION SO HER BACK END SLID
OUT A LITTLE BIT AND THAT’S WHY SO MUCH WATER
WAS LOST. AAH! I THINK DUCT TAPE TIRE MIGHT BE
A VIABLE SOLUTION.

  1. 1:47 Yea I can bet cuz shes gorgeous! ๐Ÿ˜
    (I hope shes 18 so I doesn't sound like a bad person…..)

  2. the most aerodynamical shape is the stereotypical drop shape, however,… real raindrops as shown in slow-moย footage are more round than the stereotypical drop shapes, as are frozen raindrops known as hail
    why?……………….

  3. I have mounted an 1865 wood wheel center wheel paddled known as a boneshaker bicycle and yes it feels your kidneys are displaced while taking this ride could it actually kill you in the long run as an daily ride?

  4. ๐Ÿคฃ this reminds me of when I was 7-8 years old and popped my front tire. I didn't know how to patch a tube yet so I removed the tire and rode on the rim until it broke. It's quite jarring to ride directly on the rim

  5. U know we did this with our hands at school during team day with one block on the bottom and it almost touching the ceiling we did it 8 times before it fell to the floor just with our hands

  6. The originals already did this with car tires, running out of ideas? I just seen the video clip popup in my feed b4 this one

  7. I'd test this again on a wet road. I predict that the grip of the duct tape on the road will be bad, and might change your idea about this concept..

  8. I used to ride all over chico ca with ductape tires…โ€ฆ.. fill the groove with tape till you have a small bit of tire wrap around and between each spoke with copper wire…. then finish with a few more layers to make the tire … then do the same as the wire with ductape to hold it centered… its not a soft ride but it will get you anywhere a regular tire will

  9. you need to polish the duct tapes not to stick any rock and it will do even better 75% efficiency of the normal tires DAN TAN

  10. When your Original Wheels on your Bike Shoot It with the gun it Explode but the Duct Tape nah doesnt Explode your Just Going Straight Away from the Shooter

    Kid seriously….. how!?!
How can you be a kid and not know how to ride a bike.

A fully ambulatory, child of sufficient age and mental capacity.

  12. No need for a duck tape just convert all spooks into a small spring all around the wheel and with those tires of course it could move around smoothly even on rough roads those spring act like a shock absorber

  13. Duct tape is definitely not a viable solution as it is largely impractical. The adhesive glue it uses is heavily dependent on temperature and fails easily in humid environment. On top of that it lacks friction too. Try it during winter and you will see how horrible it functions.

  14. Reminds me of World War 2 bicycles in Holland, at the end of the war, wooden tires or solid rubber tires were used. The solid rubber tires were made out of strips of rubber.

  15. I know niggas in the hood who wouldn't spilled no water on either test rims or duct tape… she just don't know how to ride a bike
