How Rubber is Made for Tyres in Thailand

Last night we saw Sonmai cutting the rubber tree. And 60 to 70 of the little cups in the rubber tree make one of these rubber sheets. This is the the dry latex rubber ready for sale. The white milk from the tree, the latex, is mixed with water and acetic acid, it goes semi-solid and then it’s put through a smooth roller to press the water out and then after that a fluted roller to get the rest of the water out and we’re left with what looks like a bath mat. It’s about a kilogram. It’s worth about 20 baht, or 40 cents US. for that much work…..for that much work. So think hard when you buy a pair of car tyres the person who actually produced the rubber didn’t get too much money for it.
