Emergency Wheelchair Caster Fork Repair (Wheelchair Mech Shop: Repairs)

Today was just meant to contain
a vlog about me going to the Choose Your Own Adventure
Queer Sober Dance Party. But I’ve had a catastrophic failure
on my wheels and need to fix that. So welcome to wheelchair mech
shop emergancy repairs edition. It’s the cas… the right hand
caster off my wheelchair, also part of the right hand fork.
I’ve had caster axel pins split before but I’ve never had a fork
failure, in five years of having this chair. Props to Quickie for
a chair with plastic caster forks five year life span it’s been
pretty good. So yeah, wheel, that’s just broken
clean off and that’s split. So yeah, I’m away from my home
base so this is going to be a bit of a bodge fix. Even if I was at my
home base I’d have problems fixing this, because it needs a
new part and it’s going to take a few days before I get a part.
I’m probably looking at the end of next week before I can replace
this. But for now I’ve got to get myself through the next few days
and back to home base and break out my spare Quickie
Revoultion while my Heluim’s needing repairs. I’ve got the contents of my
tool kit, there’s not much here. But what I do have is a big
bolt and some repair washers and some nuts that form my
emergancy axel pin. I’m going to try and squash this
back together and somehow temporarerly attach this wheel
to what’s left of the forks. [fast forwarded audio] [metalic sounds] [fast forwarded audio] Crushing that between a couple
of repair washers has flattened it. So I’m going attempt to put
this back on there using this big bolt and some of it’s bits. [metalic sound] I’ve got a repair washer, M8
bolt, another repair washer, a spacer for the wheel itself,
the wheel… That still spins… I’m going to put the other spacer
on, just so I’m not tightening a nut right against the wheel. Then
main nut, it doesn’t spin very effectively as I’m having to
tighten this quite tight, but it rotates. It will be enough that
I can rest the wheels on it. Then wing nut which acts as a lock
nut to stop the whole thing coming undone… and while that’s not
pretty and probably won’t be strong it will hopefully enable me
to limp around on wheels. Without having to be entirely
dependant on medding myself up, bracing, and walking, It’s a b… it’s a bodge, but it’s what
I can do when I’m on the road. PLUR peeps
